1. greatly improves in-lap use of notebooks, and *especially* convertible tablets
2. does a great job of keeping your notebook cool and your lap even cooler

If you're wary of spending money on laptop accessories, think again. I found this one very much worth the $30 (bought directly from www.laptopdesk.net). Check their website for more info.

First, a few minor cons:
1. If you're using the inclined ("desk") mode on your lap (which I prefer to the flat mode), then the laptop tends to slip a little, especially when you've crossed your legs or propped up your knees/feet. Not a big deal, though.
2. The arm that props up the inclined half in the inclined mode doesn't "catch" i.e. if you lift the laptop+desk by holding just the laptop and the inclined side, then the bottom side straightens out. Again, a very minor flaw, since you can almost as easily hold both the bottom side as well.
3. If you have a widescreen 14", or 15+ inch laptop, then the laptop's feet will probably be off the surface in the inclined mode. This may worsen the slippage issue.

About the heat reduction, it's quite impressive in the inclined mode. In the flat mode, it's not a huge improvement over a table. It's still a huge improvement over a lap or (worse still) a pillow.

Compare this with:
1. Adapt-a-lap (available on amazon) - seems pretty innovative, but I can't say for sure without using it.
2. LapGenie (google it) - has the best independent height/angle adjustment, but is expensive ($130), and is not as user-friendly on a soft couch, in a chair, or when you want to cross your legs. The advantage, though, is that the weight of the laptop stays off your lap, so it may be a good idea with 7+ pound laptops.

Overall, for a convertible tablet PC, I found the lapworks desk to be the best option. Search for "laptop desk review" on the web if you want to explore further.
